The Municipal Market Space and Anish Kapoor at the Brighton FestivaL 2009

In 2009 the Brighton Festival appointed the artist Anish Kapoor as the Guest Artistic Director of the Festival to turn Brighton into one big art gallery.

The Dismemberment of Jeanne d’Arc inspired by the French martyr was one of the large and striking artworks Kapoor was commissioned to create for the Brighton festival and it was installed in the vast space of the old market at Circus Street. The bright red installation – formed of resin and pigment – transformed the space and became the setting for a performance of the Rossini cantata Giovanni D’Arco orchestrated by Sciarrino and sung by Anna Grevelius. The festival was an excellent showcase for the extraordinary building, which we've now opened for use by the local community.
