Cathedral Group and McLaren Property have joined with Sussex Caring Pets, a Brighton-based charity, to send five therapy support dogs and their owners to spend time with 20 children aged five to ten at Carlton Hill Primary School this month.
The support dogs and their owners offer the pupils the chance to read aloud to their furry, non judgemental new friends, as part of a wider project to help boost reading confidence and overcome barriers to learning.
The Sussex Caring Pets charity was set up three years ago by Graham Bourgoing, who teaches at The Cedar Centre, a school for children with special and complex needs in Hollingdean, where therapy support dogs and their handlers have been hugely beneficial to the students through the charity’s ‘Reading with Ronald’ literacy programme. They now work regularly in 14 schools in Brighton & Hove.
You can volunteer yourself and your canine friend, sponsor a dog and support the charity through their website:
